A Lo.Co Kid's Perspective Series - Dear Governor

Dear Governor,

Imagine your state being famous for an environment with less pollution in the air than any other place in the world and if your state had less people with cancer. Also, where your state could save money. Where people would feel better about themselves and where people wouldn’t be depressed. This could only be possible if smoking was illegal. Some types of drugs have already been legalized but smoking has not been illegalized in the states of America and your state could be the first. Illegalizing smoking will help the environment and will help people, while the other side argues that smoking is fine for the environment and isn’t bad for people. Making smoking illegal would have a significant impact on your state. Smoking should be illegal because it will help the society and everybody’s health and I will tell you why.

I think that smoking should be illegal. I think this because it could change people’s lives in a very negative way. Smoking is very bad for people and can cause lots of scary things in your body. Such as, on www.debate.org it states, “Millions of people around the world are affected by lung cancer. According to the U.S. Center for disease control (C.D.C), cigarette smoking is linked to about 80% to 90% of lung cancers.” That proves that smoking is linked to the majority of lung cancer diagnoses and that smoking causes terrible things in your body. Another piece of evidence is to show that smoking is not just bad for the consumer, www.debate.org states, “People can also die from the inhalation of smoke from another person’s cigarette, cigar, pipe. The C.D.C had noted that about 7,300 people who never smoke die from lung cancer due to secondhand smoke each year.” That evidence proves that smoking does not just harm the consumer but everybody around them. If a kid lives with a parent that smokes then the kid would always be getting secondhand smoking and then the kid could get sick even by the smell. Those are some of the reasons why I think that smoking is not good and should be illegal. This matters because if it does not stop then it will hurt big groups of people and cause devastating problems.

The other side argues that smoking is not that bad for people and that you can avoid second hand smoking. It is true that you may be able to avoid second hand smoking but when people smoke you will probably be able to smell it on them and then a kid could get sick by the smell or even cause lung problems from smoke drifting in the air. When people say it’s not bad for you, you're right, it’s terrible for you! My evidence is “The tar sticks to clothing, skin and the insides of our lungs! With the nicotine and the tar working together, there are a lot of bad diseases linked to smoking cigarettes. Diseases like throat cancer, mouth cancer, bladder cancer, lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and heart disease are all caused by smoking. Smoking accounts for 30 percent of all cancer deaths and 87 percent of lung cancer deaths.” Smoking can cause many different problems and diseases in your body and just smoking alone causes a lot of the cancer deaths. Therefore, with that evidence smoking is terribly bad for you and needs to stop.

Altogether, smoking should be illegal in your state. Smoking is a dangerous risk and by making it legal it’s endangering many people. Smoking affects the environment by polluting the air, it creates more people to have different and more uncommon types of cancer, and many more.

On a personal note, this is a big deal to me! I hear about the increase of vaping with kids my age. It is still such a new product and there has not been enough research yet about the negative long-term effects of vaping. It is very concerning. Also, I have struggled half my life so far with asthma. I always have to focus on my breathing and clean fresh air really helps my asthma.

To end things, my family had a loved one pass away from difficulties with lung cancer/disease. So you understand governor, please consider creating a bill and make smoking illegal to help your state have a healthier environment.

Best regards, A Governor in Training
