Forward to School!
Am I looking “forward” to going back to school this year?
It is hard to say. I have always enjoyed keeping busy and school helps me concentrate especially with the last three unpredictable semesters. It wasn’t fun to have a lot of activities be canceled or postponed. It was down right depressing. I will definitely miss sleeping in though once school starts again!
During the pandemic, what was the most difficult and the most positive thing while going to school?
I think the most difficult thing for me with school during the pandemic was how everything was online plus trying to stay organized and focused. It was hard to stay organized because all the teachers had different forms of teaching and different ways to use the resources. For example, one teacher might use a certain application for homework while another teacher might expect you to turn homework into a different spot. This could then lead you to forget to turn something in or miss an assignment entirely.
One positive that came with online learning was how flexible the teachers were and how they wanted every student to receive good grades. For most teachers, as long as you turned in the assignment, you still received credit. So, it was nice having the flexible deadlines. Another way the teachers were helpful was by always being available to answer questions and by holding an afternoon class where you could have one-on-one time with the teachers.
For my high school, it is required that you obtain 40 or more hours of volunteering at a non-profit organization(s) to graduate. During the major part of the pandemic, there were little to no opportunities to volunteer anywhere making this much more difficult to achieve. Now that everything has started to reopen, more opportunities are arising but it is still difficult to find spots at a non-profit that offers volunteer work or that isn’t already filled up. I’m torn between thinking maybe my school should reduce the amount of volunteer hours required to graduate during this time verses maybe just sucking it up and push myself harder to get the hours done when I can.
What am I looking “forward” to the most when we have in-person school full time?
First, I can’t wait to see everyone! We didn’t have the whole student body physically at school all at the same time when we did the hybrid learning in the Spring. Also, it would be great to see and meet my teachers in-person at the beginning of the school year. Lastly, hopefully there will be school activities again. I haven't attended a school dance or school social event in a couple of years. At least the majority of our school sports/athletics were moved to the Spring Semester (such as, football) and we kept to COVID protocols.
We will just have to see how this school year goes. It is all about being flexible. So, maybe flip your mindset from thinking that it is Back to School, to Forward to School! Enjoy the rest of your summer!
