4 Things to Know About Memorial Day, Other Than a Day Off
Memorial Day is more than just a day off and a long weekend filled with bbq’s and fun-in-the-sun. There is a reason, a great reason, why we get a legal holiday each year to observe on the last Monday of May. The federal holiday most importantly, honors those who have lost their lives while serving in the U.S. Military.
In addition to that, here are some other interesting facts about this federal holiday we tend to look past amongst all of the weekend plans:
1. This Day Was Originally Known as ‘Decoration Day’: You heard that right – Decoration Day! In the late 1860’s, the nickname began to catch on because people were honoring the war’s fallen soldiers by decorating their grave sights with flowers, flags and other colorful decorations. The name over the years eventually morphed into Memorial Day – pretty neat.
2. President Bill Clinton Signed a National Moment of Remembrance Act in 2000: This Act asks Americans to pause and observe a “National Moment of Remembrance” or a moment of silence, at 3:00pm local time on this day. There are a number of organizations throughout the US that observe in this moment – even Amtrak, who blows their whistles and various sporting leagues. They go Lo.Co for a complete minute.
3. The President Requests Flags Be Flown at Half-Staff Until Noon: As an additional way to honor those who have lost their lives, the President requests that all governors of the US and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, direct the flag to be flown half-staff until noon on Memorial Day – this includes all government buildings, grounds and naval vessels. Keep your eye out for various US companies, also showing their respects in this simple, but meaningful way
4. Don’t Forget the Veterans, Those Currently Serving and Military Families: It is so important to honor and remember those soldiers on this day who have fallen, but it’s just an important of an opportunity to thank those currently serving in the military, veterans who are back home with us and military families who are still going through it. A little kindness on a day like this, can go a long way.
Memorial Day is packed with history and tradition, so keep-on with your family gatherings and pool-side rituals with friends. Just also take a quick moment to #GoLoCo and remember some of the real reasons we are given the last Monday in May each year to observe.
Thank you to all of those who have fallen, who have served and who continue to serve in our U.S. Military.
